Protecting your business assets is the most important thing you can do for your company. What worked in the past may need to be updated and revised. With ransomware threats and data breaches affecting organizations worldwide, security should be in the forefront for all businesses, large and small. Below are five steps to take that will start you on the path to better IT security:
Take Inventory
A top down inventory of your current environment identifying all your vulnerable points. This should cover all your hardware and software assets, as well as your internet and cloud-based services. It is also important to gain an understanding of how your employees and partners interact with all of the technology they use. This will provide an overview of where to focus your efforts and resources.
Review Entry Points
Are you confident that your network is secure and confidential information is not being exposed online? With the significant increases in the proliferation of mobile technology and smartphones, and an ever-growing dependency on cloud-based resources, company information may be open to exposing sensitive information or unwanted attacks.
Take a Multi-Layered Approach
Diversify the types of security measures being used including Firewalls at the hardware layer, spam filters, anti-virus solutions, file level permissions, multi-factor authentication and be sure all of it is upgraded. If you are using cloud resources, is the environment compliant and are you managing your cloud servers correctly?
Risk Assessment
List all potential threats or risks to your business. Things like damage, disaster, employee negligence or misconduct with social media, crime, technical failure at your place of business, or external threats like malicious malware or ransomware.
Create a Security Plan
Do you have security policies in place to protect and minimize your risk? If you have the policies, are you training your employees to understand them?
By creating a plan, it will provide the road map to where your organization needs to be. It will also help you make decisions regarding balancing your employee’s productivity needs against your organization’s security goals.
Security should always be a work in progress –setting up a strategic plan for your business is critical. If you are interested in learning more, contact us at (845) 735-3555 or visit us www.superiortechnology.com
